My best advice is to back up all important material (if Windows hasn't already deleted them from their prior "update"), reinstall and don't update anything more recent than.say.2 years ago. Frankly at this point I don't know who is correct, but for me it doesn't matter. Tech Radar (how I came to land here) stated they're releasing yet another update this week, but instead of saying that the SSD issue has been resolved, they state the update will do harm to SSDs.

Drives take months to defrag enough to be of any concern of SSD owners worried over unnecessary write-cycles of a defrag command. How do you defragment a drive that has already been defragmented? Try it on a mechanical HDD and measure the time it takes to do the first defrag, then measure the time it takes to do the defrag again. Furthermore, doing it over and over and over, for months, also is barely using any write-cycles to be a concern because after the FIRST defrag, the vast majority of the data on the drive STAYS defragmented! (duh). While defragging an SSD is unnecessary and can result in lowering the write-life of the cells on the SSD, doing it ONCE is not enough to be a concern. Once the SSD is defragged the first time, any follow up defrag command is pointless because there is little to nothing to defrag. Why 5 months for the fix? Cause its no big deal except for the lack of education from people who don't understand why. Instead of TRIM, the OS actually does a defrag.

Microsoft is telling the truth, if there’s hardly ever any need to check for errors anymore.

SSDs work in an entirely different manner from hard drives spreading data over multiple channels to multiple chips. Should you not take our advice, there’s major caveat-NEVER defrag an SSD. Additionally, the last few iterations of Windows automatically take care of what little defragging or optimization is required. Back in the days of FAT, DOS, and slow 80MB hard drives, there was a noticeable uptick in performance after a defrag.
